🕯️ The Gentle Art of Slowing Down: Simple Living for the Modern Woman
By Genika “GG” Simon | Swell Journal
If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been running on autopilot — juggling work, family, laundry, that mysterious “junk” drawer, and the quiet ache of “is this all there is?” I get it. I’ve been there — a multitasking machine running on coffee, adrenaline, and vibes — until I finally learned the power of slowing down.
Slowing down doesn’t mean giving up. It means coming home — to yourself, your rhythm, and the life God meant for you to enjoy.
Welcome to the gentle art of slow living — Swell style.
🌿 What Is “Slow Living,” Really?
For me, slow living isn’t about living in a cabin with a goat (though honestly, that doesn’t sound bad). It’s about intention — doing fewer things, but doing them well. It’s about creating beauty in your everyday routines, and giving yourself permission to rest without guilt.
Slow living means:
-
Waking up to sunlight instead of an alarm.
-
Cooking one real meal a day with love.
-
Saying no to what drains you and yes to what fills you.
-
Letting the house be lived-in instead of picture-perfect.
-
Finding joy in little homemaking rituals — a tidy shelf, a simmering pot, a freshly made bed.
It’s not about perfect minimalism or rustic living. It’s about soul-deep simplicity.
☕ How I Learned to Slow Down (the Hard Way)
Like most women I know, I used to measure my worth by my productivity. If I wasn’t hustling, I felt like I was failing. I wore exhaustion like a badge of honor — until I realized I was burned out, overwhelmed, and spiritually tired.
God didn’t design us to live that way.
When I finally took time to heal — mentally, emotionally, and physically — I discovered what I now call The Swell Living Rule of Life:
Our home, style, mental health, holistic wellness, and community help women heal, thrive, and feel worthy of the life God has given us.
When I began living by that rule, everything softened. I learned to make tea instead of rushing. To journal instead of scroll. To pray and breathe before reacting. To find beauty in the ordinary.
🧺 Simple Ways to Practice Slow Living Every Day
Let’s talk about the how. Here are a few small, realistic ways to bring slow living into your daily life — no fancy planner or cabin required.
1. Make mornings sacred, not stressful.
Instead of grabbing your phone, start the day with a stretch, prayer, or a slow cup of coffee. Light a candle or open a window — give your senses a fresh start.
2. Choose quality over quantity.
Whether it’s clothes, friends, or projects, less truly is more. Keep only what adds beauty or meaning to your life.
3. Create homemaking rituals that calm your mind.
Folding laundry becomes meditative when you add music. Washing dishes turns into reflection when you’re not rushing. Cleaning can be a form of gratitude for what you have.
4. Simplify your schedule.
You don’t have to do all the things. Choose one or two priorities a day. Let go of the guilt — you’re nurturing peace, not chasing perfection.
5. Rest without apology.
The world glorifies busy. Swell Living glorifies balance. Nap. Sit. Breathe. Rest is productive when it restores your soul.
🪶 When Life Feels Too Fast, Try This
Whenever I feel myself slipping back into chaos, I ask:
“Is this pace aligned with peace?”
If the answer is no, I slow down.
I take a bath.
I make a simmer pot with oranges, cloves, and cinnamon.
I read real books instead of doom-scrolling.
I sit outside on the porch in nature with my cats.
I let silence speak again.
That’s what Swell Living is — a rhythm, not a race.
🌼 Why Slowing Down Heals Us
When we slow down, we begin to see God’s fingerprints on the small things — a warm loaf of bread, a conversation with a friend, a sunset that feels like an embrace.
Slow living gives us time to reconnect with our worth, to nurture our homes, and to remember that joy doesn’t require hustle. It just requires presence.
Your home becomes more than a house. It becomes a sanctuary.
Your body becomes more than an afterthought. It becomes a temple.
Your days become more than tasks. They become stories worth savoring.
